Building our family home here was a chance to embrace a slower pace. And now, it’s a privilege to also share this special place with you through our wine experiences and boutique accommodation. Set serenely among humbling landscape, we wanted Barrelled Wines to be a place where guests can reconnect with nature and disconnect from the rush of everyday life.
It’s hard to imagine somewhere less likely for a vineyard, but our unique handcrafted wines are testament to nature's wisdom — and a bit of love, labour and perseverance. We invite you to taste the results and experience the magic of this wild yet peaceful location for yourself.
MEET YOUR HOSTS
Like many kiwis, David, Haylee and their two daughters, Zoe and Elyse, have a strong connection to the sea. David enjoys looking after the vines and crafting wine, with any spare time spent surfing. As a healthcare professional Haylee has a passion for people. You’ll also see Kepa the horse meandering among the vines, and our friendly golden retriever, Daisy, is always happy to accept a few extra pats. We know many guests prefer to enjoy privacy, but if you’re looking for recommendations for activities and exploring, we love sharing our knowledge of the local area.
OUR APPROACH
Our surprising location might hint at the fact that we’re not-so traditional when it comes to growing grapes and crafting wine.
We’re fascinated by the process and the problem solving that goes into growing in this challenging terrain. It’s important to us that our wine represents what the area offers, with as little interference into that process as possible. We love the challenge of making this happen on a smaller scale, questioning conventional wisdom and working with the equipment and resources we’ve got.
And while we’re committed to producing premium wines, we’re unapologetically authentic in our approach. That means we’re less worried about typical wine-tasting rituals or fancy French terms, and more focused on simply doing things our own way and defining new rules in the pursuit of great wine.
Our vines were planted in 2018, with a vision to create distinct wines that evoke the natural flavours of the local earth, wild climate and native wilderness. We selected the site because the terrain is steep, windswept and unforgiving; a perfect place to create unique wines.
All our wine is handcrafted and bottled onsite from only hand harvested grapes grown on our property. We take steps to preserve the authenticity and diversity of our wines by minimising interventions and additions.
